Community BBQs

Through our Alaskan Native Corporation teammate, UIC Science, Battelle Arctic Research Operations parthers with scientists and researchers to bring food and joy to smaller communities with free BBQ! Hot Dogs, Hamburgers, Chips, Soda, and Fruit are often on the menu. Following the meal, the scientists offer up entertainment in the form of a presentation on the science they are conducting in their communities.

School Visits

The Battelle ARO Team collaborates with researchers to bring the science to you! We work closely with the scientists to develop an in-class activity specifically for each classroom. Whether you want to teach oceanography, permafrost, or remote sensing, we can work with you to come up with a fun, engaging project!

Field Trips

A Key Highlight Event for the Year! The 8th Grade Sea Ice Field Trip is an annual field trip hosted by the Battelle Arctic Research Operations Team in partnership with the National Science Foundation. The Field Trip gives 8th grade students the opportunity to learn about all aspects of our beautiful sea ice: sea ice biology, sea ice physics, and traditional knowledge of the sea ice.

Cultural Experts

The Battelle Arctic Research Operations Team leverages the local knowledge of our Utqiagvik-based logistics team at UIC Science LLC, which is comprised of hunters, fisherman, and whalers who were born and raised on the North Slope. That team uses the skills and fundamentals that make them successful on the land out in the field with each research team to bring that same success to science.
